I am honored to write this referral for Kimberly Grayson, who has been an invaluable partner and collaborator with the Crowley Foundation. Over the course of our work together, Kimberly has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, a deep commitment to community empowerment, and an unwavering passion for addressing youth violence through systemic change.
Kimberly led a retreat for our team, where her ability to facilitate deep and meaningful conversations around organizational development and trauma healing was evident. She is not only an outstanding facilitator but also a visionary leader who fosters a safe and inclusive environment for everyone involved. Her skillful approach around our empathy interviews and active listening created a space where individuals felt seen and heard, and their voices were able to shape actionable outcomes for our community.
What sets Kimberly apart is her integrity and commitment to social justice. She is a highly respected advocate for youth violence prevention and works tirelessly to engage communities in meaningful solutions. Her dedication to ensuring the voices of young people, particularly those most affected by violence, are heard is commendable. I have had the honor of teaching mathematics under the principal leadership of Kimberly Grayson for several years at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early College. It has been one of the most transformative experiences of my adult life. Under her leadership, we expanded the Concurrent Enrollment math program from an afterthought to one that required multiple dual-qualified teachers. She led us past the obstacles of teaching in a Title 1 school with a high level of poverty and gang violence.
Ms. Grayson’s leadership strength lies in her vision. She pictures a world where all students and teachers work together in community, in such granular detail that she can view and shape its fractal structure at every level of magnification. Because of this vision, she is able to put together the pieces of what is happening both inside the school and outside it.
Schools are often asked to solve problems that exist in the broader society, but we cannot do that without such a perspective. We also need the type of outreach into the community, integrating the community and the school, that Ms. Grayson does well. We cannot solve food desertification or a lack of resources, but we could open a food pantry in our school or have our school partner with food banks. We cannot make a dent in poverty in the community, but we could make sure that once students walk into the school, they have all the resources they need. We cannot keep kids safe from the psychological effects of their environment, but we can make sure they have access to therapy while inside the building. Ms. Grayson brought all this to DMLKJEC. She transformed it from a school with a bad reputation to one that brought honor and fame to the district.
When I started teaching at DMLKJEC, I had never taught high school before. My previous experience was in post-secondary education. I didn’t appreciate Ms. Grayson’s leadership style at first. As I worked with the students, I came to understand that they faced challenges that I had not. They needed the firm consistency that Ms. Grayson was able to provide. She worked tirelessly to make the student experience seamless from class to class, but she still remained accessible to students and faculty.
People frequently say that college changes people’s opinions, but I went to college three times with no effect. What changed mine was Ms. Grayson. Ms. Grayson challenged me to be a better person and broaden my perspective. It is with great respect that I highly recommend her approach to all who wish to rise to the challenge of our modern world.
